Larry Frank

Driver Profiles

Larry Frank, a former Golden Gloves boxer and ex-Marine, won the 1962 Southern 500 at Darlington in one of the strangest finishes ever: Junior Johnson was initially flagged the winner, but a scoring recheck more than six hours later revealed Frank had actually won by more than a lap. It was his only Grand National victory in 103 starts.

Frank retired in 1966 and ran an auto body shop in Greenville, South Carolina. He died of lymphoma in 2010 at 80, still the only driver to win a Cup race in the No. 66.
