Ralph Earnhardt never raced in NASCAR's top division, but he was a short-track legend, winning more than 350 features and the 1956 NASCAR Sportsman championship. His relentless work ethic and mechanical genius shaped his son Dale, who idolized him and adopted his hard-nosed approach to racing.
Ralph died of a heart attack in 1973 at just 45, when Dale was 22 and still years from stardom. Dale later said everything he achieved was built on what his father taught him, making Ralph the quiet foundation of the Earnhardt dynasty.
